The signs of aphasia

چکیده

Much debate in 19th century neurology centered around the question of whether there is functional specialization within the neocortex. Today, this is no longer a contentious issue: functional specialization in the adult neocortex is well established. Nonetheless, a form of this old debate rages on in research on neocortical development. At issue is whether neocortical regionalization arises from properties intrinsic to the neocortex itself (Rakic, 1988), or whether it develops in response to extrinsic factors, such as pat-terns of thalamocortical input (O’Leary, 1989). Over the last decade, evidence has accumulated on both sides of the fence. Many studies, for example, have demonstrated a fair degree of neocortical reorganization in response to a variety of sensory-input manipulations (Katz and Shatz, 1996; Pons, Garraghty, Ommaya et al., 1991; Sadato, Pascual-Leone, Grafman et al., 1996; Schlaggar and OLeary, 1991; Sur, Garraghty and Roe, 1988), suggesting that extrinsic factors exert an influence on neocortical organization. Other studies, however, have shown that some regional specific features of neocortex (e.g. gene expression) emerge independent of extra-neocortical influence (Afimatsu, Miyamoto, Nihonmatsu et al., 1992; Miyashita-Lin, Hevner, Wassarman et al., 1999). Taken together, this collection of work seems

The Effect of Priacetam in Aphasia due to Acute Brain Ischemic Stroke: Clinical trial

Background & Aims: Stroke incidence is 15 million people world wide annually and one third of these patients suffer from aphasia. Aphasia is often associated with significant disability in patients. Costs due to cerebrovascular diseases play an important role in national health expenditures. We aimed to assess the effect of piracetam in treatment of aphasia. Methods: Patients with acute ischemi...

Atypical Kawasaki Disease Presenting with Hemiparesis and Aphasia: A Case Report

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an inflammatory vasculitis. KD is classified into two groups based on clinical characteristics criteria, namely classic and incomplete. Cerebral vascular abnormality, especially arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) is very rare and unusual in KD. Here, we report a 4-year-old boy who was referred to our tertiary pediatric center with abrupt right hemiparesis and aphasia. At ad...

Correlation between Brain Lesion Site and Fluent/Non-Fluent Aphasia

Background and purpose: Aphasia is the most common communication disorder resulting from stroke. In this condition all modalities of language, including reading, writing, auditory perception, and oral speech may be affected. Aphasia is divided into two categories: fluent (Wernicke's aphasia, Transcortical sensory aphasia, conduction aphasia, and anomic aphasia) and non-fluent (Broca's aphasia,...

A Self-organized Multi Agent Decision Making System Based on Fuzzy Probabilities: The Case of Aphasia Diagnosis

Aphasia diagnosis is a challenging medical diagnostic task due to the linguistic uncertainty and vagueness, large number of measurements with imprecision, inconsistencies in the definition of Aphasic syndromes, natural diversity and subjectivity in test objects as well as in options of experts who diagnose the disease. In this paper we present a new self-organized multi agent system that diagno...

The Relationship Between Memory, Type, and Severity of Aphasia With Confrontation Naming in Post-Stroke Patients With Chronic Aphasia

Objectives: The brain’s widespread neural functions lead to aphasia in which the patients experience difficulties in cognitive and language functions. Memory, type, and severity of aphasia are associated with language and the naming process. In the current study, we investigated the relationship between memory, type, and severity of aphasia using the confrontation naming test in post-stroke pat...

Assessment of Aphasia in Iranian Patients Suffering From Frontotemporal Dementia

Objective Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is an uncommon type of dementia. The hallmark feature of FTD is the presentation with aphasia, or behavioral changes which are varies in different subtypes of the disease. We propose a quantitative aphasia test as an additive diagnostic tool for differentiation of FTD subtypes. Method: The study was performed on 20 patients, who were referred to dementia...
